Mclean & Co Jewellery Care Guide
Care Guide for 18CT Gold and Platinum Jewellery
Everyday Care
18CT gold and platinum are beautiful, durable metals, but all fine jewellery benefits
from gentle day-to-day care. To help preserve the finish and reduce wear over time,
remove your jewellery before heavy lifting, gym sessions, gardening, cleaning, or any
hands-on work.
We also recommend removing jewellery before swimming, showering, or applying
lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, and hairspray. These products can leave residue on the
surface and reduce brilliance.
Safe Storage
When not being worn, store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box.
This helps prevent scratching and keeps chains, rings, and bracelets from rubbing
against other pieces.
If possible, keep jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excess
moisture.
Cleaning at Home
To clean 18CT gold and platinum jewellery at home, use a small bowl of lukewarm
water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Soak the piece for a few minutes, then gently
clean with a very soft toothbrush or soft cloth.
Rinse thoroughly in clean water and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, toothpaste, paper towel, or harsh chemicals, as these can
mark the metal or dull the finish.
Caring for Gemstone Jewellery
If your 18CT gold or platinum piece contains diamonds or gemstones, extra care is
important. While diamonds are durable, they can still attract oils and residue. Some
gemstones are more delicate and may be affected by heat, chemicals, or impact.
For gemstone-set jewellery, use only gentle cleaning methods and avoid ultrasonic
cleaners unless a jeweller has confirmed the piece is suitable.
Wear and Maintenance
Over time, even well-made jewellery can show signs of everyday wear. Fine scratches,
slight dulling, and general wear are normal, especially on rings worn daily.
We recommend having your jewellery professionally checked and cleaned regularly to
ensure claws, settings, and clasps remain secure. This is especially important for
engagement rings and frequently worn pieces.
A Note on Platinum
Platinum naturally develops a soft patina over time, which many people love for its rich,
understated look. This is a normal characteristic of platinum and does not mean the
metal is wearing out. If you prefer a brighter finish, your jeweller can professionally
polish the piece.
A Note on 18CT Gold
18CT gold is a premium alloy valued for its rich colour and strength, but it can still
scratch or dent with daily wear. Yellow, white, and rose gold may all show wear
differently over time. White gold pieces may also require periodic rhodium plating to
maintain their bright white finish.
When to Visit Your Jeweller
Please visit your jeweller if you notice:
• Loose stones
• Worn claws or settings
• Bent bands or damaged clasps
• Deep scratches or dents
• A chain or bracelet becoming weak or stretched
Professional maintenance helps protect your jewellery and keep it looking its best for
years to come.
