Sapphire: History's Favourite Gemstone
Sapphire: History's Favourite Gemstone
Sapphires have been a world favourite since all the way back to ancient Rome. Being worn by countless kings and queens across all of history. Revered for its beautiful blue colour and thought by the Romans to protect one from harm. The gemmological term for Sapphire is Corundum and can range in every colour conceivable except red which are known as Rubies.
Sapphires are found just about everywhere in the world, but the best quality Sapphires come from Sri Lanka. Australia is also known to produce quite a lot of green sapphires. This is because of Australia's iron rich ground that turn sapphires green. Sapphires can also have multiple colours at once! These are commonly known as Parti Sapphires and are also found mainly in Australia. Sri Lanka has a unique Parti Sapphire that is pink and orange and is called Padparadscha.
Sapphire is also one of the hardest naturally occurring stones in the world. With a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale with diamonds being a 10 (although diamonds are still 4 times harder than Sapphires). Because of this, Sapphires are exceptionally good stones for everyday wear and are a good choice if you want some colour in your next piece.
